Early Earth processes and the preservation of evidence of early life

Abigail Allwood

Jet Propulsion Laboratory, California Institute of Technology, USA

The palaeoenvironmental processes associated with the earliest fossils provide valuable information about early evolution of life on Earth, and serve to focus the search for evidence of past life on Mars. Early Archean potential biosignatures occur in both shallow marine and hydrothermal deposits. However, shallow marine processes were important in the formation and preservation of relatively unambiguous biosignatures in Early Archean times.
