The ghosts behind the molecules: The history of the RNA World concept

Following the 1953 Miller-Urey experiment attempts to understand the origin of life were shaped to a considerable extent by the development of molecular biology and, in socio-political terms, by the atmosphere created by Cold War tensions. Molecularization of biology to the recognition of RNA’s key role in major biological processes and to discuss the idea that RNA could have preceded DNA as genetic material.
